  5. E. Mckight Kauffer?
    Fred Troller?
I would say rand too... this smells like rand to high heaven...

last resort would be George Giusti...

The problem is that if it's not Rand it can be anyone. anyone copying Rand. Or perhaps Rand was copying... is that blasphemous?

  6. Not Honi.

Clue 1. Even though these covers are very similar they were each designed by different designers.

  7. Lustig & Rand, or vice versa.

  8. Lustig and Rand is a very good answer and is 2/3s of the way to being correct. Here's a weird twist. Both books were designed within 2 years of each other in the 1960s. Alvin Lustig died in 1955.

  9. Last resort: diana klemin or giusti... I already said giusti. Klemin?

  10. Alvin's out, so... Elaine Lustig?

  11. Clue 2. To clarify. One of these covers was designed by Paul Rand. The other credit reads "cover design by Lustig and _____". Again, both of these were designed in the early 60s and Alvin Lustig died in 1955. How can this be? Also, filling in that blank is extremely difficult, almost unfair.

  12. Bookends, you are correct on who the Lustig is.

  13. elaine lustig and paul rand.

    now gimme those books. -Fs

  14. No way! They didn't even have florescent green back then!!! It took 2 good good artists to design that cover? I know the one on the left is Rand. Gotta be. Rand would never use that checkered pattern...

  15. I'm am sorry Mr Sockwell, we still need the correct name to got with Lustig. Though it does start with an 'R'.

Scan looks more dayglo than actual cover. And the Rand is indeed on the left.

  16. so lustig and rand did the second cover?

  17. Book on left designed by Paul Rand.

Book on right designed by (Elaine) Lustig and R____. Answer is not Rand.

  18. Lustig and Rosenblum

    ReplyDelete
  19. or maybe Lustig and Ellen Raskin, but it doesn't really look like Raskin's work...

  20. Jack Reich? I'm running out of steam...

  21. We have a winner. Jack Reich it is!

Reich was Elaine's partner for a of couple years in the 1960s until he left to go to IBM to work with...Paul Rand.

Now how do I divide up the prizes?

  23. I was gonna say Rudolph de Harak. At least visually it would have made sense form a visual standpoint.
Oooh. A romance. Lustig & Reich. Very very cool contest and design trivia fun...

  24. Yeah, this was great!

  25. I will indeed do this again.
